Nigerian authorities have seized 23.55 kilograms of heroin concealed in packs of baby food at the international airport in Lagos, the country’s economic hub, according to an anti-drug agency statement Sunday.

Femi Babafemi, a spokesman for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said in a statement that the consignment with a street value of more than 4.5 billion naira (about 10.8 million U.S. dollars) came from Johannesburg, South Africa, on board a South African Airways flight Wednesday as part of the consolidated cargo that arrived at the import shed of the airport.

The NDLEA operatives also arrested three suspects in a series of follow-up operations, Babafemi said, adding the agency will “remain steps ahead of the tricks by the desperate drug cartels.”

The most populous African country has been troubled by cross-border drug trafficking, with frequent reports of seizure of illicit drugs and arrests of suspects at the major airports in the country. Enditem
