Ghanaian varsity storms Nigeria for students – The Sun Nigeria

Officials of the University of Ghana Business School were in the Nigeria in recruitment drive for students into different courses offered by the institution.

Addressing newsmen in Lagos, Dean, University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Prof. Justice Bawole, who spoke online, said Nigeria has a huge population and ready market for university education.

Prof. Bawole explained that many Ghanaian universities always come around to recruit students and recalled that in 2022 many universities came to scout for students.

He confirmed that there are many Nigerian students in Ghanaian universities and observed that the business school has produced quality graduates occupying important positions in several countries.

Giving reasons why Ghanaian universities continue to visit Nigeria for students, Prof. Bawole said Nigeria has large population, which includes youth thirsty for quality university education.

He said: “Nigerian students are happy with the quality education they receive. Now and in the future, Nigeria will be the hub for other countries scouting for Nigerian students. When I was the Head of Department of Public Administration, 12 per cent of students were from Nigeria.

“In recent time, we have fewer students. Last year, we graduated 16,000 and 3 per cent were international students. Nigeria has a huge market for tertiary education. At UGBS, we run postgraduate programmes that expose the students to best global practice, with qualified lecturers. We have a good payment schedule and students pay 40 per cent first. We also have day and weekend programmes.”    

The International Students Recruitment Officer, University of Ghana, Mr. Emmanuel Yaw Dankwa, said the university was 75 years old, while UGBS was 61years old and was contributing to meet national development needs and global challenges.

Dankwa explained that UGBS was geared towards developing quality human resources through quality teaching, learning, research and knowledge dissemination.   

Said he: “We have qualified and experienced faculty and staff who are committed to carrying out research that is relevant to policy, covering variety of area. UGBS runs academic and professional programmes.”

He disclosed that UGBS MBA programmes provides students with ICT, business and organizational knowledge as well as skills for work in the contemporary digital era. The programmes offer academic, professional and practical insight into development and use of digital technologies for business and organizational environments.”       

According to him, the school has collaborations with leading business schools in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa in the areas of student/faculty exchanges, academic programmes, case studies and research development.

Dankwa said UGBS is into partnership with the following institutions Yale, MIT, Temple University, Howard University, Harvard and Princeton University.

In her remarks, Consular General of Ghana Consulate, Samanta Bukari, described education and human resources as key to any nation development.

She also described the University of Ghana as a premier university in Africa and has produced graduates, who are in various fields contributing their quota to national development.

The Minister Counsellor, Trade and Investment, Mr. Nicholas Quansah, said the event is an opportunity for UGBS to scout for students and produced them as human resources agents.

He acknowledged that aside trade and investment; the two countries have interacted in the area of education with students of from both countries attending schools either in Ghana or Nigeria.
