Ghana warns over illegal Starlink usage

Elon Musk’s Starlink is not licensed to be used in Ghana, however some citizens are importing equipment from West African near-neighbours.

Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA), the country’s regulator, has cautioned the general public against satellite services alleged to be from Starlink following reports of equipment being sold and operated in the country.

The NCA warned in a public notice that Starlink was neither licensed or had received type approval.

Similar warnings have been issued by Zimbabwe and South Africa regulators. Indeed, South Africa is warning that businesses supplying Starlink kit could face fines of $250,000 per day if convicted.

However, SpaceX is still showing Q3 2024 as being ‘available’ dates for service introduction in Ghana.
