Cycling: Africa Track Championship in Abuja attracts 20 countries

No fewer than 20 countries have signified their interest to take part in this years’ African Track Championship billed to hold from July 14-17 2022, at the Velodrome, Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

According to the Secretary General of Confederation of Africa Cycling, (CAC) Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia, Algeria and Ghana.

Others include Burkina Faso, Malawi, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Benin, Togo, Niger, Burundi, Cameroon and Congo Dr as well as the host county Nigeria, for the four-day Championship.

Coach Bashiru Mohammed, who is also the Technical Director of the Nigerian Cycling Federation, (CFN) said the countries are to take part in about 12 events namely – Sprint 500m Time Trials, 1000m Time Trials, Individual Pursuit, Team Pursuit, Scratch Race, Tempo Race, Team Sprint, Keirin Omnium, Point Race and Madison.

He added that Nigeria will be participating in the events in the African Track Cycling Championships schedule to take place in Abuja next month.

He stressed that CFN will soon call cyclists that excelled in the last trials at the Abuja Velodrome to camp to start preparation for the Africa extravaganza.

‘We intend to invite some male and female cyclists to close camp in the following categories: 10 U23/Elite in the Sprints and Endurance events; 10 Junior men in the Sprints and Endurance events; 8 U23/Elite women in the Sprints and Endurance events, 8 Junior women in the Sprints and Endurance events.

Mohammed disclosed that the close camp is expected to commence on the 26th of June 2022.

Nigeria it will be recalled hosted and won the 2018 edition of the track Championship in Abuja.
