Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa – August 10, 2023 —

In closing of International Mandela Day which was celebrated throughout the whole month of July, the Church of Scientology reports the final figures of human rights activities in Africa in celebration of Madiba’s birthday. As the legendary Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”, groups and volunteers throughout Africa banded together to organize a series of events to get people to know their rights.

Totaling 18 African countries including South Africa, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, DRC, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, The Gambia, Togo, Uganda, Mauritius, Sierra Leone and Zambia, volunteers passionately worked to spread human rights messages in commemoration of Mandela Day. They used booklets called What Are Human Rights? and The Story of Human Rights Documentary to educate people on their rights.

In conclusion, over 13,000 were lectured on human rights for Madiba’s Birthday month. Then with media, over 60,000,000 more were reached and heard the human rights message.

“In celebration of the Man’s birthday, I trained several pastors to in turn train their children on human rights”, said Professor S.J. Uba, human rights activist in Gauteng, South Africa. “Tata fought for human rights around the world and is exemplary of dignity and equality”, Uba adds. “We need to do the same.”

Helping to eradicate human rights violations, a long-lived ambition Madiba strived for, human rights activities included school lectures, seminars to young and old and presentations to encourage youth and community members to act were done throughout Africa. “It was easy to get everybody behind the activities to honor Mandela’s birthday”, said Asthra Maximov, Director of Social Reform for Africa. “Our founder L. Ron Hubbard was very much in favor of human rights himself”, Maximov added.

“The world must change for the better. I proudly organized human rights presentations in my community in celebration of Mr. Nelson Mandela’s birthday” says J. Isambela, a dedicated volunteer in the Democratic Republic of Congo. “Mandela was a man of Peace. I took pride in setting forth his examples to my people in DRC”, Isambela furthers stated.

The campaign, United For Human Rights, was established 25 years ago to make people aware of their rights. Per surveys across the world, it was shockingly found that very few people are aware of their rights. Many do not even know they have 30 human rights, nor can they define what human rights mean.

“I was proud to organize a United for Human Rights activity in commemoration of International Nelson Mandela Day”, said D. Ifeakachukwu, long-standing and veteran human rights volunteer and coordinator in Nigeria. “I mounted a stand and microphone and conducted human rights interviews in one of the quiet areas in Lagos State Nigeria, asking members of the community about the honorable Mandela and what he means to them”, Ifeakachukwu stated. “Each response signified respect, peace and courage. I gave them The Story of Human Rights booklets, strongly encouraging them to learn their human rights and be ready to stand by them. It was such a breathtaking experience that pictures alone cannot tell the full story”, Ifeakachukwu concluded.

As International Peace Day on 21 September 2023 is just around the corner, human rights activities sponsored by the Church of Scientology will continue in South Africa and other African countries, to spread Ubuntu and peace.
