AMCRON conference receives over 60 abstracts | The Guardian Nigeria News

Planning Committee of the third international conference and yearly general meeting of Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON) has received over 60 abstracts.

The AMCRON president, Prof. Eserinune McCarty Mojaye dropped the hint yesterday at a meeting where strategies were perfected for a successful outing.

The two-day conference with a theme, “Communication, Mass Media & Governance in Africa: Trajectories, Expectations and Realities,” will be held between December 6 and 7 at University of Lagos.

He said: “I am delighted to report that response to our call for papers has been overwhelming. Abstracts interrogating diverse sub-themes of the conference were sent in from numerous scholars spread across the various universities and polytechnics in Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana.”

In an earlier statement, he had attributed governance conundrum in most African countries to cultural degradation.

“Amid this quagmire is the role of the mass media, which has since gone beyond the conventional to include the powerful social media. Often, the media has been accused of contributing significantly to the discordant tunes among the players in governance,” Mojaye added.

The nature of media ownership, entrenched interest of media owners and the constantly evolving social media dynamics have meant that the communication and conversations will keep changing.

“However, to what extent these changes are in favour of the continent remains a question that must be probed. These perspectives and many more are what media and communication scholars and professionals will attempt to provide answers to at the third edition of AMCRON conference,” the scholar added.

In the same vein, chairman of the planning committee, Prof. Tejumaiye Adepoju said arrangements had been perfected for an outstanding performance.

He thanked members for their commitment and reiterated that the conference was to interrogate the role of the media in addressing discordant tunes among players in governance.

Of particular interest, according to him, is the long-term effect of re-emergence of military coup d’etats in Africa, especially in countries like Burkina Faso, Chad, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Sudan.
