AMAA Redefined as Jury Unveils Nominees

–Mami Wata, ‘Aníkúlápó’ top nominations

Vanessa Obioha

In honour of the late founder of the Africa Film Academy (AFA), Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, who passed away earlier this year, the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) is undergoing a significant transformation as it approaches its 20th edition.

According to Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, representing the AFA’s board, this transformation is vital as the awards prepare for their 20th edition and future plans.

The 19th edition of the awards, themed ‘The Renaissance,’ is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at The Balmoral event centre within Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

Anyiam-Osigwe made this known at a nominees unveiling ceremony hosted by veteran actor and singer, Segun Arinze.

The nomination process this year, as stated by jury member Steve Ayorinde who represented the returning jury president, Keith Shiri, went through a tedious and steadfast process to arrive at the nominees of each of the 26 categories that are expected to slug it out for the 2023 AMAA.

Ayorinde also emphasized the transparency of the AMAA jury process which has received acclaim from industry heads.

Topping this year’s nominee list is ‘Mami Wata,’ the fantasy film directed by C. J. ‘Fiery’ Obasi, which has received an impressive 12 nominations, including Best Director and Best Film. Close behind is Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Aníkúlápó,’ with nine nominations.
