Mene optimistic about running Africa’s Continental Free Trade Area

PRETORIA – The man tasked with running Africa’s Continental Free Trade Area is optimistic.

It’s first Secretary-General, Wamkele Mene, is preparing to oversee one of the biggest free trade areas in the world.

The institution will officially open its doors in Ghana next month.

After a fierce battle between South Africa and Nigeria, Mene is now heading the African Continental Free Trade Area.

His focus, for now, is making sure the secretariat of the free trade is established in Ghana.

But he’s fully aware of the responsibilities lying ahead.

“This is the year of silencing the guns and that must be met to enable economic development to be fast-tracked,” he said.

Mene is pleading for patience, saying economic integration doesn’t happen overnight but says steps have been taken to achieve that goal.
