The suspect, Donald Bricker Jr., 27, was arrested and will be charged with first-degree murder.
According to police, Adebayo was meeting her boyfriend to talk about their problems. Witnesses saw them fighting in her car in the parking lot. The meeting turned into a tragedy as Bricker is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend as she ran away from him.
Adebayo, known to her friends as Shadé, was parked in a white car in the parking lot at around 7:30 p.m. Monday night. She came to meet with her estranged boyfriend.
“They agreed to meet there to talk about their relationship,” said Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks. “And evidently she got out of the car to get away from him. That’s when he also exited the vehicle with the firearm and shot her.”
It was a particularly vicious killing.
“Witnesses state that when he exited the vehicle, he shot at her, and she fell to the parking lot,” said Starks. “He then drew closer and fired the weapon again.”
She was taken to a trauma center where she died.
By the time police got to the crime scene, Bricker, who is from Hagerstown, Maryland, fled the area in an old Ford Ranger pickup truck.
Police later found Bricker in Dickerson, Maryland, but he refused to stop his vehicle. Police chased him for 25 minutes before he crashed the truck. A gun was found in the vehicle.
Bricker was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“As soon as the doctors state that he is well enough to leave the hospital, then the warrant will be served and he will be arraigned,” said Capt. Starks.
Bricker is on the sex offender registry in Maryland. In 2008, he was charged with rape and other sex offenses.
Adebayo and Bricker had been dating for about six months. They recently ended the relationship, according to police.
Meanwhile, Adebayo’s Facebook profile picture had a caption of “Smile 🙂 Even on your darkest days …”
For her friends and family, that day was June 1.
Jenna Santucci has been friends with Adebayo since they were in high school. She told me that Adebayo was loved by so many and will be truly missed by all.
Santucci has started a Facebook page for Adebayo. She and the other friends are having a candlelight vigil at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night at their high school — Seneca Valley High School in Germantown.
